Environment and Safety Awards for Dahanu Thermal Power Station

  • 5th consecutive 'GreenTech Environment Excellence Award'

  • Safety Awards for Accident Free Power Station in a year

Mumbai, October 9, 2009: Reliance Infrastructure's Dahanu Thermal Power Station has won GreenTech Foundation's prestigious 'GreenTech Environment Excellence Award 2009' for the fifth consecutive year. The power station has also won three other prestigious national level awards in the field of environment excellence, safety and safety innovations as well as recognitions for best individual performances of its employees.

The power station had won the 'GreenTech Environment Excellence Award' for the first time in 2004 and since then has been adjudged the best power plant in achieving environment excellence. The award will be presented during 10th Annual Global Environment Conference between October 10 and 12, 2009.

Among the other achievements of the power station is the prestigious national 'Safety Innovation Award 2009' that it bagged for the third consecutive year. The award has been conferred on the power station by the Institution of Engineers India for several innovative safety measures that it adopted. This National Level award was presented during Safety Convention - 2009, last month in New Delhi.

The Union Ministry for Labour & Employment has also recognized the power station on Safety front as well as individual achievements. The power station bagged the prestigious Safety Award for being accident free in the performance year 2007 as well as having the lowest ever frequency rate of accidents.

The ministry has also recognized the power station for individual performances as four employees, viz. Shri Louis Fernandes, Shri Jayant Vaze, Shri Dinanath V. Patil, Shri Devanand R. Sawant, were conferred on the prestigious 'Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar'.

While commenting on the occasion, Mr. Lalit Jalan, CEO & Whole-time Director, Reliance Infrastructure said, "We are happy to receive the prestigious recognition for the Dahanu Thermal Power Station and appreciate the efforts taken by our people for achieving new heights of excellence. Till date, the power station has won more than 60 prestigious awards and recognitions, nationally as well as internationally. Out of these more than fifteen are for the power station's contribution towards achieving excellence in environment management systems. To add to its achievements, three employees working in the power station have been conferred with the prestigious 'Prime Minister Shram Shree Award'.

Reliance Infrastructure's Dahanu Thermal Power Station is one of the best operated power stations in the country. This is the only power station in the country, which has been adjudged one of the best power plants in the world by Platts Power Magazine, USA in year 2004. Dahanu Thermal Power Station is the only systems compliant power station in the country, which has been certified with ISO 9001 for quality operations, ISO 14001 for environment, OHSAS 18000 for Occupational Health & Safety and SA8000 for Social Accountability. The power plant is also certified for Information Security ISO 27001.

The power station, at present generates 500MW and lights up the areas of Suburban Mumbai at the cheapest tariff of Rs.2.45 per unit compared to the other power utilities. Power Station is consistently operated at more than 100% Plant Load Factor for last consecutive five years & currently running at 103.89% for this financial year with availability factor of about 98.8% till September.

The power station, in view of the ample availability of required resources and infrastructure readiness, has tremendous potentials to expand and add capacity to the tune of 1200MW; thus, aggregating the total capacity to 1700MW and meet growing demand in Mumbai with the cheapest power.
