Reliance Energy join hands with the World Bank

  • Partnership aims at developing world class power infrastructure in the unorganized developments in Suburban Mumbai.
  • Unorganized developments in Shivajinagar area of Govandi suburb of Mumbai to be the first beneficiary of the project.

Mumbai, May 20th, 2009: Reliance Energy, a power distribution arm of Reliance Infrastructure Limited, has joined hands with the World Bank to develop the world class power infrastructure in the unorganized developments in its licensed distribution area in the Suburban Mumbai. As a part of this joint initiative, the Company would undertake its first project in the unorganized developments of Shivajinagar area of Govandi in Eastern Mumbai suburb.

The World Bank as an administrator to the scheme, Global Partnership on Output - Based Aid (GPOBA), has entrusted Reliance Energy, being a licensed power distributor in the area, to execute the project in Shivajinagar, Govandi. As a part of execution of the programme, Company will initiate activities pertaining to the development of power distribution infrastructure in a planned and systematic ways. This would include several initiatives like laying down new distribution network; installing electricity meters to ensure authorized and metered power supply, etc. In view of the monsoon approaching very soon, the work is expected to start after the monsoon.

The Company, though getting aid from the World Bank under the programme to execute the project, would be substantially investing in creating the world class infrastructure for the betterment of the residents of Shivajinagar. The initiative, when completed, is expected to be beneficial to around 26000 households in the area and would serve almost a population more than one lakh residing in the area.

While speaking on the development, Mr. Lalit Jalan, CEO & Whole-time Director, Reliance Infrastructure Limited said, "We serve more than 10 lakhs consumers, who are residing in such unorganized developments and consume less than 100 units of electricity in a month. It would be our endeavour to ensure that these consumers do get a metered supply and enjoy a privilege of being a proud citizen of this great metropolitan city. We, therefore, welcome the initiative and assure best of our services to all the concerned".

Kms. spread over the Mumbai Suburbs, from Bandra to Bhayander on Western side and Chunabhatti to Vikroli & Mankhurd on Eastern side.
